Fourier Transform Infrared / FTNIR » The PCM 1000/5000 » Technology

The Analect PCM Series Process FTIR and FTNIR Analyzers feature the same rugged Transept® IV interferometers used in the Diamond 20 Laboratory Systems, assuring seamless transfer of calibration data, only it is configured for continuous, unattended operation in harsh and hazardous environments.

PCM 1000 FTNIR Analyzers can be configured with fiber optic coupled sampling devices (12,000 to 4,500cm-1) or with Optibus® close-coupled sample cells (12,000 to 1,200cm-1). PCM 5000 FTIR Analyzers use Optibus® close-coupled sample cells (7,000 to 450cm-1).

The power of FTNIR and FTIR analysis can be applied to many types of samples using a variety of sampling techniques, including:

FTNIR Fiber Optically coupled, Bi-directional Sampling Techniques.
Transmission and Diffuse Reflectance

These configurations include a source, detector and fiber optic launch/receive modules inside the PCM analyzer enclosure. Most fiber optic coupled transmission cells/probes use the standard internal source on the Transept® IV FTNIR Interferometer which is pre-modulated and directed to the cell/probe and returned with fiber optics to a detector. Some Diffuse Reflectance applications use a source which is launched directly to the probe. The beam is returned to the interferometer where it is post-modulated and detected. In this case the detector module replaces the standard modular source inside the interferometer.

FTNIR Fiber Optically coupled, Mono-directional Sampling Techniques.

Diffuse Reflectance
This configuration includes the fiber optic interface and appropriate detector for use with externally sourced sampling devices, like the process ReflectIR™.

Fiber Optic Multiplexers

One of the greatest advantages of fiber optic coupled analysis in the NIR is the capability to easily and reliably switch the NIR source and detector to several sampling devices. PCM 1000 multiplexers switch the entire beam on both the source and detector side. This permits the use of a single detector and eliminates channel matching problems of designs which split the beam. Coupled with the inherent speed of analysis and the highly configurable PC80 Software environment, a single analyzer can be configured to monitor 16 different processes, each up to 150 meters away!

FTNIR or FTIR Close-coupled Sampling Techniques.

Transmission and Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR)
For use with close coupled sample cells using Optibus® beam transfer system, typically with extractive sample systems. Hamilton Sundstrand can also design and provide customized sample conditioning systems. Contact the factory with the requirements for a proposal.

To meet the rigorous environmental requirements, all PCM series analyzers start with a NEMA 4X stainless steel enclosure and add power regulation and surge suppression, unique vibration isolation, and internal temperature alarm with protective over-temp shutdown. PCM Analyzers can be configured to meet your area electrical safety classifications including general purpose, CENELEC Zone 1 or Zone 2, and NFPA Class I, Division 1 or 2.
In addition to these measures of protection, each PCM is equipped with RemoteRX instrument diagnostic module that monitors the status of the most critical parameters of instrument operation like source voltage and current, power supply voltages, and laser signals. This allows trending of the values to enable predictive maintenance and in the event of a problem offers fast, comprehensive diagnostics to solve the problem quickly.

PCM Analyzers can easily control and monitor sample systems and communicate with external devices with discrete analog and digital I/O. An internal PLC with high density I/O and options for intrinsic safety (I.S.) barriers and pilot valves for pneumatic control.

PCM Analyzers are controlled by Windows™-based PCs which can either located remote from the analyzer (like in a general purpose control room) or can be embedded into the PCM enclosure with a rugged operator interface including full color flat panel display for complete stand-alone operation. Both the embedded and remote PC are configured with watchdog timers which reboot the system in the event of a hardware or software lockup condition, and a modem or optional network interface cards for remote access / control.
