The Hydrocarbon Smart System (HSS) is an on-line process FTIR analyzer that utilizes licensed and patented ExxonMobil Constrained Principal component Spectral Analysis (CPSA) and SmartSystem technology for monitoring refinery process streams.

Extended Spectral Range
By utilizing the extended FTIR spectral range the HSS has been shown to have equivalent performance as other limited range spectroscopic analyzers on some fuel properties such as RON and MON but better performance on composition measurements, particularly low level benzene, a critical parameter in today's fuel products.

Extractive Sampling System
The HSS Analyzers use an extractive sampling approach. It is well known that the sample temperature and water content have a significant effect on spectroscopic measurements of hydrocarbons. This requires an extractive sampling approach to condition the sample prior to measurement, which negates much of the perceived advantage of fiber-optically coupled systems. With the HSS, the sample is measured through a flow-through liquid transmission cell, close coupled with Optibus® high-efficiency beam transfer components.

Calibration Transfer
The HSS Analyzers feature the same rugged Transept® IV interferometers used in the Diamond 20 Laboratory Systems, assuring seamless transfer of calibration data, only it is configured for continuous, unattended operation in the harsh and hazardous environments of the refinery.

SmartSample System
The composition of fuels is known to vary over time due to crude oil source changes, changes in operating unit availability or operation and intentional changes in product specification. These changes will change the outputs reported by any composition analyzer to a greater or lesser degree. The HSS system uses CPSA and it's Smart Sample system to identify when the stream has strayed out of the range supported by the current model. It then captures the most useful sample with its corresponding spectra data to allow efficient model updating to better predict the new composition range.
HSS Analyzers can easily control and monitor sample systems and communicate with external devices with discrete analog and digital I/O. An internal PLC with high density I/O controls and monitors the sample system with appropriate intrinsic safety (I.S.) barriers and pilot valves for pneumatic control of sample valves.

Analyzer PC
HSS Analyzers are controlled by an embedded Windows™-based PC with a rugged operator interface including full color flat panel display for complete stand-alone operation. The HSS has a watchdog timer which reboots the system in the event of a hardware or software lockup condition, and a modem or optional network interface cards for remote access / control.

High Reliability / Low Maintenance
To meet the rigorous environmental requirements, all HSS series analyzers start with a NEMA 4X stainless steel enclosure and add power regulation and surge suppression, unique vibration isolation, and internal temperature alarm with protective over-temp shutdown. HSS Analyzers can be configured to meet your area electrical safety classifications including CENELEC Zone 1 or Zone 2, and NFPA Class I, Division 1 or 2.
In addition to these measures of protection, each HSS is equipped with RemoteRX instrument diagnostic module that monitors the status of the most critical parameters of instrument operation like source voltage and current, power supply voltages, and laser signals. This allows trending of the values to enable predictive maintenance and in the event of a problem offers fast, comprehensive diagnostics to solve the problem quickly.
Replaceable optical elements (the source and laser) are pin mounted for easy replacement - replacement does not require re-calibration of the system.
